Cardboard puzzles all feel the same. This one does not. It is laser cut from wood into irregular pieces, and a good number of them are shaped like small animals, leaves and tools. Placing them is more like fitting than searching, and the finished picture, a bold hippo, is worth keeping.

The large size is the right amount of work for a couple over a few evenings, or for one person over a lazy weekend. The pieces are thick enough to handle, the print is sharp and the wood has a faint warm smell.

It comes in a sturdy box. Glue it and frame it, or break it up and pass it on.
